ANGELFISH facts for kids

Angelfish are some of the most colorful and fascinating fish in the ocean. In this kid-friendly guide from Ocean Xenia, children can learn fun and educational angelfish facts, including where angelfish live, what they eat, and how they grow, through a playful conversation with Berry, the main character from our children’s book.
Meet the angelfish

Hello, little explorer!
I’m an Angelfish, you might remember me from your book! Isn’t it fin-tastic to finally meet you?

You’re definitely one of the most beautiful fish I’ve ever seen!

Hehe, you can say it, I get that a lot!
My name comes from my special shape. See how my body looks like an angel with a head, wings, and a flowing dress? That’s how I got my name!

That’s so cool! Do your fins help you fly… I mean swim?

Exactly!
My shape helps me glide smoothly through the water, and my big fins make me look larger and scarier to predators. It’s my underwater superhero trick!

Do you have a big family?

Oh yes! I belong to the Pomacanthidae family, and we have about 85 different species living in the ocean.
But guess what? I also have cousins who live in freshwater! They belong to the Cichlidae family, and there are only 3 species of freshwater angelfish.

Wow! Where do you like to live?

When I’m in the sea, I love warm, shallow waters like coral reefs in the Indian, Atlantic, and western Pacific Oceans.
But when I’m freshwater fancy, you’ll find me swimming through South American rivers!

What do you eat all day?

I’m an omnivore, which means I eat both plants and animals!
My favorite snacks are tiny invertebrates, small insects, larvae, little crustaceans, and wiggly worms. Yum!

Do you have babies too?

I do!
When I’m about 8–12 months old, I’m ready to start a family. I choose a partner and a special place to stay.
Before laying my eggs, I spend 24 whole hours cleaning the spot-sparkly clean for my future babies!
That’s a lot of work!

It is, but taking care of the ocean and our families is very important.
And that’s why protecting our seas helps creatures like me thrive!

Thanks for telling me all about you!

Anytime, Berry! Keep exploring, keep learning, and always be kind to the ocean
